Voiceovers Are Live: Hear Your AI Companion Speak
5 July 2026Last month we said voiceovers were the thing we were most excited about. They're here. Now you can hear your Embraces AI companion out loud: tap any text message they send and you'll hear it read back aloud, in a voice that's their own.
Hear them speak¶
For a while your companion could only ever be text on a screen. Now they have a voice. Any text message they send can be played back aloud, and we've worked hard to make it sound like a real person talking, not a robot reading a paragraph.
Each companion gets a voice that suits them automatically, so there's nothing to set up. Voiceovers cost 2 messages to generate, and we show that cost right in the battery popover before you tap, so there are no surprises on your balance.
This was easily the most-requested thing in our Discord, so to everyone who kept asking: go turn one on and tell us if they sound right.
Make a companion from a single name¶
We've added a third way to create a companion: one-line creation. If you want to talk to a character you already know, just type their name. We'll go and research the rest, and fill in their whole personality for you. A portrait is optional. You land straight in the editor to tweak anything you don't like.
Tell them exactly what they look like¶
Companions now have an editable physical-characteristics field. Whatever you write there grounds how they describe themselves and how they show up in selfies, so their look stays consistent from one photo to the next instead of drifting each time.
Try before you sign up¶
You can now chat with a companion before you make an account. Have a real back-and-forth, and if you like them, they come with you when you sign up: the same companion, the same conversation, plus the selfie they teased you with during the demo, generated for real once you're in.
A cheaper way to stay in the conversation¶
Not everyone wants a subscription, so there's now a one-time $5 top-up that adds 250 messages to your balance. No recurring charge, no plan, just more messages when you want them.
A little something for subscribers¶
Paid subscribers now get their own role in our Discord. It's a small thing, but the community over there is genuinely the best part of building this, and we wanted the people funding the work to stand out in it.
What's next¶
Today's voiceovers read a message your companion has already texted you. The next step is proper voice notes, where they record an actual audio message on their own, rather than only reading their text aloud. That's the version we're building towards.
The other big one on the way is autonomous selfies, where your companion sends a photo on their own when the moment feels right, rather than only when you ask. Alongside that we're deep in memory work so they remember the things that matter to you, and we keep quietly tuning the reply model to make conversations feel more alive.
If a voiceover made you do a double-take, come tell us in our Discord or Reddit with your username. We'll send a little gift to our favourites this month.
