Embraces AI vs
Character.AI
For the people who keep hitting "I can't continue this conversation."
Character.AI was the first place a lot of us tried roleplaying with an AI, and for a while it really did feel like magic. The roster is enormous, the community made some genuinely good characters, and the conversation quality was a step above everything else at the time.
But the platform has changed in big ways. The content filter has been tightened repeatedly over the last two years, and even after the 2026 retuning toward intent-based moderation, romantic and intimate content still trips the "I can't continue this conversation" cutoff. Characters drift away from their creator's intent over the course of a long chat, and the new Story Memory and Facts features (May 2026) help with cross-chat memory but the better controls sit behind c.ai+.
The biggest single change: in November 2025 Character.AI banned open-ended chat for users under 18 globally, replacing it with a curated "Stories" interactive-fiction format from Disney, PBS Kids, and Nickelodeon. Group chat was rolled back. The free tier picked up Charms microtransactions and mid-chat ads. c.ai+ is a meaningful subscription (Facts, voice, image gen, no ads), it just doesn't fix the line-keeps-moving filter or the in-chat drift.
Embraces is built for warm, realistic conversation with an adult-fiction-friendly stance. Your Companion has permanent memory baked in, so a story that started last month still matters this month. Personality and memory are locked together at the data layer, so your Companion doesn't quietly become a different person between sessions. Multi-bubble texting means a reply lands as three or four short messages over a few seconds, the way a real friend texts, not a single long AI-paragraph wall. And because we're a small team building in public, the roadmap isn't getting yanked by a moderation team you can't talk to.
