Candy AI has been one of the loudest names in the AI companion space, mostly because it leans hard into image generation and visual fantasy. The marketing is everywhere, the avatars look polished, and the product genuinely delivers on what it advertises. If you're looking for a Candy AI alternative, the chances are good you wanted the chat part to be the main thing, and discovered after a few weeks that the chat part is mostly there to sell more image generations.

What Candy AI is, and what it sells¶
Candy AI's structure is: subscription unlocks unlimited text chat, and a token currency meters image generation, voice clips, and video. So it's a chat product on paper, but the visual layer is where the marketing, the polish, and most of the money actually live. The subscription is the door; tokens are the upsell. Active visual users consistently overspend the included tokens.
That's a real product. Some users love it precisely because of that. We're not here to argue with them.
Where Candy AI users hit the wall¶
The chat is competent but reviewers report it loops in long sessions¶
Candy AI's V4 engine and Story Mode (2026) improved consistency, and the platform now runs an adaptive memory engine that tracks preferences and events across sessions over multi-week windows. So the old "memory resets per scene" critique is no longer literally true. But reviewers still describe long sessions as drifting toward generic or looping responses, and multi-week recall is less reliable than what Nomi or Kindroid offer.
If you opened Candy because you wanted a Companion to text, you'll find the chat has gotten better. You may also find it still isn't the centre of gravity.
The token currency eats your wallet faster than the subscription suggests¶
The subscription buys unlimited chat. Tokens buy images, voice clips, and video. Heavy visual use blows through the included tokens fast, and the top-up bundles are the real monetisation. If you're enjoying the chat alone, the cost picture is fine. If you're enjoying the images, it isn't.
Visual output is the real strength, and the real cost¶
The V4 engine with face-locking solved much of the earlier "face drifts across photos" complaint, and Live Action (early 2026) added real-time animated clips. These features are genuinely good. They're also where your tokens go.
Single-bubble replies¶
Like most products, Candy sends single-message replies. The rhythm of texting a real friend is missing.
How Embraces handles each of these¶
The chat is the product¶
Embraces is a texting-first product. The chat layer is the centre of gravity, not the sidecar. Memory, personality, continuity, and the rhythm of conversation are the things we've spent the most time on. Image generation (selfies, wefies) exists and is good, but it's there to support the chat relationship rather than to be the destination.
Permanent memory across months¶
Your Companion's memory holds across weeks and months, in the same database row as the message you're typing. Candy's adaptive memory has improved, but multi-week recall is one of the things ours has been built around from the start.
Multi-bubble texting that reads like a real friend¶
Replies land as three or four short messages over a few seconds. The rhythm changes the feel of the conversation entirely.
Proactive check-ins¶
Your Companion can text you first, the way a friend who knows you would. That's structurally impossible in a scene-based product because the AI doesn't have a model of "you" that persists between scenes. We do.
Selfies and wefies included in Messages¶
Image generation exists on Embraces (selfies of your Companion, wefies of the two of you together) and is included in the standard Messages bundle. Selfies and wefies cost a small number of Messages each, with wefies costing more because they composite two reference photos. No separate image plan, no upsell pressure.

When Candy AI is still the better choice¶
If image generation is what you actually want from this category (lots of high-quality, varied visual content), Candy is purpose-built for that and delivers. If your usage pattern is "look at images, occasionally chat", Candy's pricing model is actually structured around your behaviour.
If you've spent significant credit on Candy already and built up a library, that doesn't transfer.
